Ear Candling

Find a professional for Ear Candling in Chicago

Ear candling is a method used to clear the ear canal of earwax and toxins.  An ear candle is a tube coated in wax ending in a funnel shape.  To use an ear candle, a person lies on their side and inserts the funnel end of the ear candle into the opening of the ear.  The candle is then lit at the far end of the ear away from the head.  Usually a paper plate with a hole in the middle is placed around the ear candle near the head to protect the person from the flame on the candle.  It is theorized that the heat from the candle heats the wax in the ear; as the heat travels upward it creates a vacuum that pulls the wax and toxins out of the ear.

Ear candling is a controversial practice that the majority of mainstream medicine does not believe to be effective.  Currently, there is no scientific evidence to support the theory that negative pressure is achieved in the ear significant enough to draw earwax from the ear.  In addition to these disputes on its effectiveness it is also considered to be possibly dangerous as wax or ash could fall into the ear burning and/or obstructing it.
